My studio professors use to say that we should not wait for that lighting bolt of creative inspirations, because it doesn’t ever happen. I did not believe them, because i thought I had experienced it. At least once or twice. But now what I use to see as a lightening bolt like idea, is really the slow coming together of these little bits of ideas and inspirations until it forms this mass of one solid idea. That is what the founding of Charmed-mag.com was for me. I will not speak for Jennifer. When we met in late June at The Daily Grind (an old coffee house institution of Baltimore), I had a feeling this is something she had been thinking about for a long time. For me is was a completely new idea that seemed to satisfy a lot of what I wanted out of my next creative venture. We wanted to build on our years of experience with interior design, our love of the arts, be able to promote the work of talented up and comers, and show off the Baltimore we love when ever we can to a national audience.
A little background. I have been working at a high end residential interior design firm for 16 years. My boss is retiring at the end of 2013 and I have been doing a lot of soul searching on what I wanted my next career to be. I am passionate about furniture design, which is why it was so startling when Jennifer’s idea for an online magazine felt so right. Jennifer was recently back in town from living and working in California and was now building back up her own interior design business Jennifer Hardy Interiors. It was the perfect time to buckle down and take the risk.
There was a lot of caffeine fueled brainstorming that happened that first meeting and most of those ideas will be represented in the first issue. What kind of experience do we have in publishing…well none. This is a project fueled by passion and creativity. We will keep you posted and fill you in on our process as we figure out this new world of online magazine publishing.
